About This Workshop

Many people who get excited about ACT, and feel they understand it conceptually, find it more difficult to implement the work for real-life clients with unique challenges. The chief goal of this advanced-practice workshop is to teach you a more flexible application of ACT, one that bridges the gap between conceptual understanding and implementation. Experiential knowing—not just verbal understanding—is key to practicing ACT with heart and wisdom. In this workshop you’ll practice implementing the core ACT processes in a flexible and heartfelt way with your clients. You’ll bring challenging elements from your clinical work to the discussion, and Robyn Walser will guide you on how to meet them with a fluid and interwoven process linked to theory and carefully applied to the needs of the people you serve. Far beyond stepwise clinical technology, this masterclass for ACT therapists is about the art and science of doing ACT well on a session-to-session basis with all your clients.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. Describe what is meant by therapeutic presence from an ACT perspective.
  2. Explain what is meant by ACT processes in the therapeutic relationship.
  3. Explain what is meant by ACT processes from the perspective of personal internal experience and how it is relevant to therapy.
  4. Explain what is meant by ACT processes and their flexible use with respect to the six core components of ACT.
  5. Describe barriers to fluid implementation of ACT and how to work through these barriers in an ACT consistent fashion.
  6. List the six pathological processes and aspects of how they function in the client’s life as well as recognizing how to consider which ACT process applies given the pathological process.
  7. Describe how core ACT processes and aspects of their function should be addressed and explored in session.
  8. Describe how the use of ACT interventions reveal the flow and non-toxic nature of private experience and how this can promote therapeutic change.
  9. Describe the role of personal values in guiding the work done in ACT therapy and how to apply it across sessions.
  10. Explain how ACT metaphors and experiential exercises can be tailored to fit the client’s experience and language practices including the social and cultural contexts.
  11. Explain the importance of undefended choice as held by the ACT model.
  12. Describe how ACT techniques are broadly useful for intervening with multi-problem patients dealing with a number of life issues.
  13. List the benefits of mindfulness as a practice as well as an ongoing process during session, including how it can be used to cultivate compassion.

Prerequisites

Participants in this workshop are strongly encouraged to have had at least one formal multi-day ACT training workshop prior to taking ACT III. If you’re brand new to ACT, please read more about our ACT I and ACT II trainings.

Praxis will offer a full refund to registrants of both live and live-online trainings who cancel their registration prior to 14 days before an event/course. If a registrant would like to cancel their registration within 14 days of the event, no refund will be offered. However, the registrant can elect to receive a credit to be used toward another Praxis event within 1 calendar year.
